The patient suffered a Central Retinal Artery Occlusion, as evidenced by the acute-onset painless monocular vision loss, as well as the cherry red spot on physical exam. (FA 2019, pg 526)

Retinal ganglion cells are "critically dependent" on oxygen supplied by the central retinal artery. Without oxygen, these cells die, and as such they cannot transmit signals to the optic nerve.
