Carrier-mediated diffusion = facilitated diffusion. This is a passive (no ATP energy) process. Question says "a new compound is taken up by bacterial cells...the compound is not concentrated in the cell" to tell us that the compound is moving down its concentration gradient --> i.e. this is diffusion.
