I think this question is only hard because it is written so vaguely that it took me a while to even understand what the question was: was it asking what was important for the virus to infect or for the body to recognize that an infection has occurred? Basically, to answer this question, all you have to understand is that for a virus to infect a cell, there has to be on the cell some receptor for which the virus can bind to. That's it.
