Why is it that the answer isn't also glossopharyngeal since you test CN IX by saying "Ah" also? Please help! Thanks!!

sinforslide  I believe that the arrow pointed to the uvula; uvular deviation would be testing for CN X palsy. CN IX's only motor innervation is the stylopharyngeus. (Not testing for gag reflex!) +15

Glossopharyngeal nerve function: - Taste and sensation from posterior 1/3 of tongue - Swallowing - Salivation (parotid gland) - Monitoring carotid body and sinus chemo- and baroreceptors - Elevation of pharynx/larynx (stylopharyngeus)

utap2001  The only motor of CN9 is stylopharyngeus. Almost all other motor function of pharynx and larynnx are from CN10. And stylopharyngeus function is to elevate pharynx. This question is to elevate soft palate. +1

Glossopharyngeal nerve (IX) = afferent gag.

Vagus nerve (X) = efferent gag.
